The White Card Explained: What It Is and How to Get One

The White Card (general construction induction training) is required before stepping onto almost any construction site in Australia. It's a nationally recognised card, but it's issued through state-registered training organisations, so the provider you use needs to be approved in your state.

Who actually needs one

Not just tradespeople — apprentices, labourers, and in some cases even site visitors and suppliers delivering materials need a White Card before entering an active construction site.

What the course involves

A short accredited course, available in person or online depending on your state, typically completed in half a day. It covers workplace hazards, your rights and responsibilities on site, and what to do if something goes wrong.

Does it expire?

In most states, no — but Western Australia and Queensland have periodic refresher requirements, so check your specific state's current rules before assuming your card is still valid, especially if it's been several years.
