Key conditions common to most of these awards
Working away from home
There is no separate "FIFO award." Fly-in fly-out and drive-in drive-out tradespeople are covered by the same award as their trade — commonly the Building & Construction Award, the Electrical Award, the Mining Industry Award, or the Black Coal Mining Industry Award, which contain the clearest provisions for this type of arrangement. Look for the "living away from home / distant work" clause (or the remote camp allowance in the mining awards), which applies once a job site is too far from an employee's usual residence to reasonably return each day.
Accommodation & meals
Employees receive whichever is greater: a living-away-from-home allowance, or full reimbursement of reasonable accommodation and meal costs. On-site camp accommodation is generally provided at no cost.
Travel to and from site
Paid travelling time (up to 8 hrs on a travel day), fares for the outbound and return journey, and a fares/travel allowance for daily transport between accommodation and the worksite.
Getting home
Regular return trips home are a standard part of these arrangements, with reasonable travel costs for scheduled returns reimbursed. Rosters and rest-and-recreation patterns vary by employer and site, so confirm the specific provisions in the applicable award clause or enterprise agreement.
The nine awards covering most trade occupations
