How to Read a Payslip and Spot Underpayment
VeriTradie Team 29 August 2026 3 min read
Under Fair Work rules, every Australian payslip must show certain information — and gaps or vague figures are often the first sign something's wrong.
What must legally be on your payslip
- The pay period it covers
- Gross and net pay
- Your hourly or annual rate
- Hours worked (for hourly employees)
- Superannuation contributions being made on your behalf
- Any deductions, itemised
Underpayment red flags common in trades
- A flat rate that never changes regardless of weekend, night, or public holiday work — penalty rates should show up as a difference on those pay periods
- Super not appearing at all, or appearing irregularly — a widespread issue for apprentices and younger tradies specifically
- Being classified at a lower experience/qualification level than you actually hold, which caps your base rate
If something looks off
Compare your payslip against the Fair Work Ombudsman's Pay and Conditions Tool for your award and classification — see our guide on checking your award rate for how.
